Hikes in and Around the Gorge — A Sample of Some of the Best

WONDERFUL WATERFALLS - on the Oregon side of the Columbia River, a 15 minute trip from Stevenson, WA. The forest trail follows a crystal clear creek for about one mile before reaching a magnificent 120’ falls. Smaller waterfalls are discovered along the way as well as views of magnificent rock faces, old growth Douglas-fir trees and wildflowers. With short interpretive talks along the way, we explain geology, flora, and natural processes. Entire trip - 2 1/2 hours.

MOUNTAIN TOP VISTA - a 15 minute trip from Stevenson. This hike lets visitors see the Columbia River Gorge from a different perspective. After a steady but gentle uphill climb, participants behold spectacular views up and down river as well as Mount St. Helens and Mount Adams. Interpretive talks include Gorge geology and how it has affected human land use for over 10,000 years. Entire trip - 3 hours.

TRIPLE TIERED FALLS - 20 minutes north of the Columbia River, the trail traverses the banks of a crystal clear creek, through a soft green forest. Cross a swinging bridge on the way and gaze into tumultuous Falls Creek. End at a three layered waterfall where rainbows abound. Entire trip - 4 hours.

PACIFIC CREST TRAIL - a 20 minute trip from Stevenson gives participants a chance to see Old Growth Douglas-fir forests adjacent to the Gorge. Walk on gentle terrain through the forest and have a snack next to a bubbling creek; 1 1/2 hours.

GORGE FACT:

The Columbia River Gorge is a part of one of the largest areas of lava flows in the world.
