Spousal Support

Spousal support is divided into three types in Oregon.

"Transitional" spousal support is to help a party attain education and training necessary to prepare for re-entry into the job market (or for advancement therein) and become self sufficient.

"Compensatory" spousal support is awarded when there has been a significant financial or other contribution by one party to the education, training, vocational skills, career or earning capacity of the other party. This type of support reimburses one spouse for contribution to the education or training and enhanced earning capacity of the other.

"Maintenance" support is long-term (or indefinite) spousal support derived from longer-term marriages with large disparities in earning capacities.
